C003 - Gwndel

Gwndel is a chandelier family inspired by the growing Neo Deco trend. The arch shape is a staple silhouette found in the Art Deco movement, while adding the mixed materials, and multiple diffusion levels. All add to making this design a modern take on a traditional movement.

Initial ideation of the design was quite quick, as the initial sketch was of the glass in the inverted arch shape but as a wall sconce. From there I thought patterning the glass in a circle, and creating a cascading tiered silhouette would fit nicely with the glass' form.

The first renders were of the glass with no top to hold the glass, and lamping coming from a centre column within the chandelier. Later on for shipping ease, and production purposes the glass was to be held by a scalloped metal ring, where LED light could illuminate the glass from behind. This would wash the glass, more evenly illuminating the chandelier.

Initial samples of Gwndel showed the challenges of assembling and constructing such a large and complicated fixture. Multiple pieces of glass detached, and did not hang straight. This required a complete redesign of the glass holders. The frame was also redesigned to allow for the glass to be pre assembled into groups. However this left a gap between the decorative scallops in the metal. Making reverting back to the original frame construction ideal.
